What does the name “Halong Bay” mean?

In Vietnamese the name “ Halong Bay” translates to "descending dragon". The name carries with it a mystical aura. According to ancient folklore, this celestial seascape was formed when a family of dragons descended from the heavens, spewing forth jewels and jade that metamorphosed into the iconic limestone islets. These natural sentinels, rising majestically from the emerald waters, stood as a formidable barrier against invaders, safeguarding the land and its inhabitants.

How was Ha Long Bay formed?

Water from the rain swapped into the tectonic-formed crevices in the limestone. The fissures gradually grew wider due to this continuous erosion, resulting in the structures that exist today. The sea has advanced during this time, making it noteworthy. As the sea's movement peaked, it started to shape what is now known as Hạ Long Bay.

What makes the color of Ha Long Bay's water emerald green?

The reason Ha Long Bay appears emerald is due to its shallow depth and white floor, which absorbs red light from the sun. The green light originates from the ocean floor. Ha Long Bay's white limestone is responsible for its color. Blue in photos is light reflecting off the sky.
