Dedicated to the young apostle St. John, who was Jesus's favorite gospel writer, the monumental basilica is located in the ancient city of Ephesus near to Izmir. The cross shaped basilica has six domes and was built in the 6th century.
It is assumed that one of the three tombs that have been unearthed during the excavations in the region belongs to St. John but no remains were found in the other ones. It is known that the remains were moved to the Church of the Holy Apostles in Istanbul in the 13th century.
