Location:

The Hanging Church is situated in Old Cairo , it dates back to the late third century and the beginning of the fourth century A.D.

Why was it built?

It was built to be dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Dimiana.

Explanation:

It was called so because it was built over remains of roman fortres, its measures were 23.5 m Length and 18.5 m width but it became much smaller through the ages.
This church played an important role in the history of the Coptic Church, it became the seat of the patriarchies after transferring it from Alexandria to Alfustat .

This church is famous by the existence of 7 altars. These altars have icons which are inlaid with ebony and cedar wood dates back to the 10th and 13th century. The hanging church has some relics of saints, holds their commemoration, which attracts a numerous people.
